Manager – Advanced Building Construction Collaborative

A 1.5-degree future requires decarbonization of the energy system through both generation and consumption, with the buildings sector being responsible for 40% of global GHG emissions. RMI is a non-profit think-do-scale tank that has a 40-year history of working on clean energy solutions using integrative design solutions. RMI applies rigorous techno-economic research, whole-systems expertise, and entrepreneurial approaches to help markets take advantage of breakthrough energy innovations.
RMI’s Carbon-Free Buildings (CFB) program seeks to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions globally by 2045 through solutions that build a just and equitable energy transition. This program is a team of 65+ staff. CFB drives impact using a range of methods including research and technical analysis, facilitation, stakeholder engagement and policy work, strategic client engagements, thought leadership, and demonstration projects, all focused on accelerating the adoption of efficiency, electrification, and renewable energy technologies.
RMI’s Advanced Building Construction (ABC) Collaborative is seeking a manager with exceptional project management, finance and communication skills. This manager will play a key role in building the recently launched ABC Collaborative, shaping and executing on its strategy and establishing and maintaining member relationships.

ABC Collaborative Overview
The ABC Collaborative seeks to catalyze transformation of the US construction sector in order to accelerate decarbonization of the built environment. The Collaborative achieves this through market facilitation and strategic engagements among incumbent and emergent buildings sector actors. The Collaborative works across new construction and retrofits, leveraging industrialized construction approaches to support and modernize the US construction industry.
Roles and Responsibilities
Collaborative Strategy and Tactics with an Emphasis on Finance
Inform Collaborative strategy and tactics drawing on industry knowledge/experience and stakeholder/collaborator engagement
Lead or support development and drafting of Collaborative planning documents
Lead or support scoping, outlining, drafting, and production of Collaborative reports, briefs, and blogs
Inform research and analysis activities to support Collaborative thought leadership
Working with internal and external experts, support development of innovative financing and risk management models for ABC
Lead or support finance related workstreams, closely collaborating with internal and external subject matter experts
Support technology scaling and commercialization activities for ABC innovations, including engaging investors and consulting with technologists in development and evaluation of innovative technologies and business models
Support provision of technical assistance by Collaborative and external partners to owners/developers, solution providers, and/or manufacturers/fabricators
Help lead stakeholder research and outreach with a wide variety of relevant buildings sector actors
Oversee the Collaborative’s network of stakeholders, including ensuring Salesforce database is efficiently organized and up to date, managing partners and junior staff to effectively leverage client management systems.
Lead negotiation and support execution of contracts with collaborators
Lead or support development of stakeholder collateral, such as slides/decks and informational materials
Lead or support presentations to stakeholders
Lead or support regular ABC Collaborative website updates
Events and Logistics
Lead or support planning, agenda design, organization, and execution of various Collaborative events, which may include general convenings, targeted webinars and workshops, Collaborative working group sessions, and other programming
Coordinate with internal marketing/communications teams as well as external partners to manage event communications and promotion
Support session facilitation during events
Lead or support prompt execution of follow-ups subsequent to events
Collaborative Operations and Project Administration
Maintain familiarity with Collaborative activities and effectually brief internal leadership and key federal/state award stakeholders, as needed
Working with program coordinator, finance, compliance manager, development officers and Collaborative leadership, ensure compliance with federal and state award reporting including oversight of project budgets
Support proposal development for relevant funding opportunities
Assist in unanticipated tasks required to operationalize and build up the Collaborative, as needed (similar to any start-up)
Passion for RMI’s mission and for improving the built environment
Graduate degree or equivalent professional experience in a field related to the built environment
Minimum of 5+ years of professional experience with at least 3 years of project management experience
Experience in real estate development, real estate finance including equity investment, mortgage lending, secondary markets, and/or project financing
Experience with building science, building energy systems, design, engineering, or similar technical field
Background working directly with senior-level stakeholders from industry, finance, or other areas, especially relating to energy/carbon goals
Experience with donor development or managing grant- and donor-driven projects
Experience with group facilitation and workshop design
Experience mentoring and managing junior staff
Experience in managing budgets and business units
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Proven organization skills and flexibility when it comes to dynamically balancing priorities
Strong team and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently
Demonstrable problem-solving skills
Good judgement and strong decision-making ability
Passion for advancing market-based solutions to climate change

The position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, there is a preference for you to be based in California, but you can be based near any of our US RMI offices (Oakland, CA; Boulder or Basalt, CO; New York City; or Washington, D.C.), or remote.
RMI compensates based on the level and requirements of the role. Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. Typically, managers based in the U.S. join at the minimum to mid salary range of $103,000-$121,000.
You would also have an additional 10% bonus target!
