Strategic Communications Manager- Climate Aligned Industries

Overview    

RMI is seeking an experienced Strategic Communications Manager with excellent project management skills to lead marketing and communications strategy and execution for RMI’s Climate Aligned Industries (CAI) team.

Your passion for RMI’s mission will serve you well in accelerating the US clean energy transition to create good jobs, enhance economic competitiveness and innovation, and build more equitable and resilient communities. The CAI team works globally with industry, governments, and civil society across sectors, with focus on heavy industry and long-haul transport, a.k.a. “harder-to-abate” sectors, to (1) inspire corporate leadership, (2) advance the most important climate policies, (3) develop and implement state and corporate climate strategies, and (4) stimulate innovation and foster technology break-through. Ideally, this position will be based in Washington, DC or New York. 

You will be a strong team player and manager who works as an integral part of the CAI Program team while coordinating and collaborating with multiple other RMI programs, our central Influence Team, and external partners. As the Strategic Communications Manager, you will use data-driven insights about our audiences and their motivations to provide communications and marketing guidance to our sectoral experts, develop and execute strategic in-market campaigns, and coordinate communications efforts across channels with other RMI programs to inform and influence key stakeholders and decision makers.  CAI works extensively with other programs across RMI so the ability to coordinate across programs will be essential. This role requires someone with deep experience at the intersection of policy, politics and communications. 

Your Key Roles and Responsibilities:    

Develop and Lead CAI Marketing and Communications Strategy 

  • Provide guidance to Program leaders to position, frame and develop narratives from an audience-centric perspective.  
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver audience-centric marketing plans and communications campaigns for our current program initiatives that leverage diverse channels, including media relations, social/digital, events, direct communications, events, partnerships, and RMI- and partner-owned assets.   
  • Assist managing director and other program spokespeople in thought leadership, including LinkedIn and social channels, Op-Eds, speaking engagements. 

Internal and External Coordination

  • Collaborate with and leverage RMI in-house communications capabilities (i.e., editorial, design, web, traditional and social media) and third-party agencies.    
  • Coordinate public outreach with other partners, including non-profit, public health and community groups as needed; identify potential partnerships with other local and national organizations to amplify key issues.  
  • Coordinate communications efforts with other RMI programs and manage internal processes to efficiently deliver relevant thought-leadership, stories, and insights to targeted audiences.   
  • Seek out, develop, and manage strategic communications partnerships with like-minded NGOs, influencers, and/or advocacy groups in the target market.     

 Manage Execution  

  • Follow RMI Influence Team processes to project manage blogs for CAI team, insight briefs, and larger reports.
  • Maintain initiative websites and recurring updates of content.
  • Leverage data insights to identify and research target audiences.
  • Proactively leverage news-making moments, milestones, outcomes, and impacts to drive awareness and interest in the program with target audiences, influencers, donors, policymakers, and decision-makers.    
  • Develop in-depth understanding of audience(s) and familiarity of technical content for owned impact areas.    
  • Develop and report against metrics of success and track activities against outcomes and impact.    
  • Direct and guide RMI technical experts into the right conversations (media, social, other) that are shaping target audience sentiment.    
  • Other responsibilities as assigned 

Minimum Qualifications   

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, public relations, communications, marketing, or related field and/or appropriate combination of education and significant experience.    
  • 5+ years’ experience in marketing and communications disciplines in the political and policy space, with clear experience in developing strategies and leading successful global communications campaigns. 
  • Ability to manage multiple relationships and complex projects.
  • Tight project and task management skills. 

Preferred Qualifications    

  • Prior experience and relationships with reporters covering Capitol Hill either as a communications staffer for a Member of Congress, an administration, or an advocacy organization.
  • Experience covering heavy industry topics, ideally on energy-related topics
  • Experience juggling conflicting priorities is ideal.
  • Experience working on sustainability, climate, or energy issues.  
  • Interest in climate change, climate policy and action, green hydrogen, or the broader energy transition.   
  • Experience marketing to diverse channels, including communities of color.  
  • Executed or performed work in the United States at a federal and state level. 
  • Ability to communicate to a diverse, policy, industry and stakeholder audience.
  • Proven career and successful track record of strategic marketing and communications efforts. 
  • Relevant Graduate Degree.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language relevant for target markets complementary to English-speaking regions, e.g., Spanish or Portuguese 

Location

This position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it is highly preferred that this role be located in Washington D.C. or New York. This will be discussed further throughout the interview process.      

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $79,000- $93,000. This is dependent on experience that will be discussed and vetted through the interview process. This position also includes an additional 10% bonus target.  Salary to be determined by the applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
