Internal Communications Manager  

We are seeking an experienced Internal Communications professional to support our organization as it continues to grow and expand to meet the challenge of transforming our global energy systems for the sake of the climate.   

As the Internal Communications Manager, you will shape the voice of internal communications for our 300+ change leaders world-wide. You will be responsible for connecting through storytelling and innovative communications strategies RMIers to our mission of transforming global energy use and to one another.  As the Internal Communications Manager, you will develop and own the processes and communications to inspire our fast-moving, passionate, and high-preforming staff. In this role, you will work across all teams, partnering closely with the People Team to influence culture - supporting inclusive teams, celebrating our successes, and highlighting our impact.    

As the Internal Communications Manager, you will be an individual contributor and will report to the Managing Director of Marketing and Communications as part of RMI’s newly imagined Influence Team.  Upon hiring of a Chief Storyteller or Director of Content Strategy, you will report into that individual. Join us!    

Key Responsibilities  

  • Develop and execute a strategic internal communications plan in line with our strategic goals, values, talent strategy, and external employment brand  
  • Connect staff to RMI’s culture and mission via engaging storytelling  
  • Work effectively across teams to execute effective communications initiatives  
  • Produce vivid and inspiring communications including but not limited to newsletters, emails, announcements, and messaging for organization-wide meetings and retreats 
  • Develop efficient and effective internal communications that reach the right audiences at the right time and spark engagement 
  • Ensure internal messages are consistent across all mediums throughout the organization 
  • Handle internal responses to critical/emergent situations  

Minimum Qualifications  

  • 5+ years experience managing internal corporate messaging 
  • Experience designing and implementing an internal communication plan 
  • Experience connecting with diverse audiences; a champion for inclusive language and communication in all formats 
  • Successful track record using storytelling to positively impact organizational culture 
  • Experience tailoring content to audience, balancing messaging with diverse stakeholder needs  
  • Excellent writing, editing, publishing and storytelling skills 
  • Strong communication skills, active listener, and ability to synthesize complicated information clearly and on message 
  • Demonstrated ability to take ownership of multiple projects and competing priorities  
  • Comfortable in a fast-moving, collaborative, and ambiguous environment  
  • Tech savvy; proficient in PowerPoint, MS Teams, Outlook, and Zoom   
  • Our work is global and our workforce is distributed. Occasional travel may be required and working past normal business hours is occasionally necessary   

Preferred Qualifications  

  • Experience with energy/climate-change or mission-driven organizations  
  • Experience measuring and reporting impact of internal communications to senior leadership 
  • Able to combine strategic thinking with fun and creative experiences 
  • Comfortable experimenting with new ways to reach employees with information, driving engagement to organizational initiatives 
  • Project management experience 
  • BA in communications, journalism or related field  


This position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, location is flexible. RMI’s offices are in New York City, NY; Oakland, CA; Washington, DC; Boulder, CO; and Basalt, CO.     


The salary range for this position is $79,000- $93,000. This is dependent on experience that will be discussed and vetted through the interview process. This position also includes an additional 10% bonus target.
