US Utility Products and Engagement Manager - Carbon-Free Electricity

Program Overview  

The Electricity Program accelerates the deployment of clean energy solutions in the global electricity sector to ensure a transition to a distributed energy future. We work with utilities to overhaul business models and evolve into “utilities of the future,” with businesses to develop and share solutions for integrating distributed energy resources into the grid, and with influential early adopters who are willing to experiment with and ultimately implement transformative solutions.  


Position Overview 

Our Managers are creative project leaders who guide and manage team members to craft visionary yet practical solutions for our industry partners and research. Managers are RMI’s primary project managers and work closely with and under the direction of RMI’s Principals and Managing Directors to design and execute projects.  

  In this role, you would provide leadership in problem solving, have the ability to develop and guide unique analysis, and aptitude for driving a team toward meaningful results. You should be self-motivated, curious, creative, and have a passion for making the world better. You would be an independent project manager with the ability to design and manage multiple workstreams, and to coach junior staff to meet project goals. You would also be often be a primary author responsible for structuring and delivering compelling written products to drive insights for our partners.  

 Our work represents a mix of team-driven original research and client/partner driven implementation-focused projects.  You will be expected to contribute to both types of work, as well as participate in communications, speaking, and donor-development for the program as a whole.  

Core Responsibilities 

Strategy & Business Development 

  • With guidance from senior leadership, shape the strategy of the Utility Transition Hub to enable its growth into the primary industry resource for US utility data and insights.  
  • Over time, develop and execute a strategy to expand the reach and impact of the Hub to other key sectors and geographies
  • Partner with CFE leadership and RMI’s Development team to develop funding strategies that sustain the Hub. This also includes potential fee-for-service engagements through RMI’s Corporate Engagement team and the Center for Climate Aligned Finance 


Project Management 

  • Lead project management of the Hub by working with team members and contractors to ensure timely and high-quality execution of project deliverables. This includes managing (in partnership with the team): 
  • Collection, processing and visualization of all relevant Hub data 
  • Engagement with a wide variety of utility sector stakeholders 
  • Design, development and execution of Hub insights and products  
  • Oversee a large team (5-10 contributors), coach and motivate project team members, and resolve any issues throughout the project life cycle 
  • Coordinate and collaborate with other internal Carbon-Free Electricity (CFE) and RMI teams to leverage the Hub as a delivery platform for RMI data and insights on US utilities 

Outreach & Engagement 

  • Lead outreach and engagement with a variety of key stakeholders (investors, investment banks, regulators, utilities, advocates, policymakers and others) in partnership with team members, to maximize the impact of the Hub’s data, analyses and insights 
  • Lead development of impactful and innovative Hub products and insights on an ongoing basis - in partnership with RMI’s Communications team - to deepen the Hub’s influence on key stakeholders 


  • Understand the underlying Hub data and methodology (along with accompanying assumptions, and their limitations) with sufficient depth to inform its development, and leverage its availability for thought and change leadership 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate degree plus equivalent experience in an applicable field such as engineering (electrical, energy), business (finance, strategic consulting), law (environmental), or computer science, mathematics, physical and social sciences.  
  • 4+ years of cumulative work experience, and excellent work references 
  • Experienced project manager who has dealt with multiple stakeholders, and has led internal and external teams  
  • Ability to oversee and support data and analytical work
  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and share knowledge and information well 
  • Ability to communicate your ideas clearly 
  • Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines 
  • Willingness to take risks by exploring and testing new ideas 
  • A passion for making the world better 


Preferred Qualifications 

  • Graduate degree 
  • Familiarity with multiple sectors, especially the electricity industry, including understanding of key trends and the stakeholder landscape  
  • Familiarity with managing a software tool development process, and accompanying agile project management techniques 


This position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Location is negotiable but must support the business needs of RMI’s Carbon-Free Electricity Program. RMI has offices in Oakland, CA, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boulder, and Basalt, CO and would welcome the successful candidate to relocate to one of these locations. Location will be discussed as part of the interview process. 


The starting salary range for this position is $112,000 - $121,000. This is dependent upon experience that will be discussed and vetted through the interview process. This position also includes an additional 10% bonus target.
