Principal - Oil & Gas, Climate Intelligence Program

RMI’s Climate Intelligence Program focuses on making emissions visible and translating data into actionable insights and tools for those best positioned to reduce emissions. We collaborate with a global network of NGOs, academics, policymakers, financial institutions, and businesses to enable emissions reductions in large, mature industrial sectors, including oil, gas, and waste. Our work focuses not only on quantifying the risks of climate inaction but also on identifying emerging opportunities to meet 1.5-degree climate targets.
We are looking for a Principal level candidate for our Oil and Gas Solutions Initiative in RMI’s Climate Intelligence Program. The Principal will work closely with the program management team (Managing Director and Senior Principal) to manage planning and budgeting, measurement and evaluation, budget, and initiative delivery.
In this role, you should be well versed in lifecycle assessment of environmental impacts of complex industrial supply chains. You should also have experience researching and developing emissions mitigation strategies.
The work setting is fast paced and entrepreneurial. You will collaborate closely with team members, be a thought leader and a strong communicator both within and outside RMI. You should be at ease with a wide range of private and public stakeholders and adept at building relationships with senior managers from partner organizations, NGOs, regulatory bodies, and oil and gas companies, waste management operators, and financial actors. You must have experience in project management — setting clear goals and timelines, key performance indicators, and ongoing program reporting. You must be accustomed to managing multiple goals, time pressures and course correcting in response to changing circumstances and uncertainty (e.g., shifting partnerships, changes in the industry, organizational changes, functional complexities, political and regulatory changes).
The primary responsibilities for this position include:
- Lead strategy development and project manage the expanding Oil & Gas Solutions team, including lifecycle assessments, formulating solutions, developing project timelines, resource plans, success metrics, and program budgets.
- Liaise closely with other RMI programs, including Center for Climate Aligned Finance, Strategic Analysis and Engagement, and Breakthrough Technologies.
- Oversee 3 managers and a growing cadre of associates, provide professional mentorship, structure and work product management
- Work effectively in numerous internal and external partnerships to affect change
- Manage a diverse stakeholder network using policy, finance, industry, academic, and civil society leverage points for climate alignment.
- Contract with and coordinate the work of external consultants supporting development of various work streams.
- Work closely with RMI’s development team to develop and roll out funding proposals, outreach, reports, and strategic thinking.
- Work closely with RMI’s people team to recruit, hire, and retain staff.
- Work closely with RMI’s communication team to develop and roll out communications strategies.
- Participate in philanthropic fundraising and business and donor development activities.
- Travel for internal and external business meetings.
- Contribute to RMI’s overall organizational objectives.
- Graduate degree in relevant topic (see below) or equivalent acquisition of on-the-job expertise
- Relevant topics: lifecycle assessment (LCA), environmental science, engineering, economics, public policy, business
- 15+ years of relevant professional experience
- 3+ years as a team manager
- Experience guiding high performing teams in a project-based work environment
- Experience with the clean energy transition, climate change, environmental justice, or related topics
- Experience managing junior team members including providing coaching and mentorship, and managing performance reviews
- Familiarity with handling big data sets
- Broad contacts across relevant professional networks – private sector, government, and NGOs
- Ability to travel at least 20% of the time (once public health conditions allow)
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong people and managerial skills and experience managing multi-stakeholder processes including members with diverse viewpoints
Preferred knowledge, skills, experience, and competencies:
- Understanding of climate change science and related issues and policies, familiarity with global energy transition scenarios and climate alignment pathways
- Prior industry experience in the oil and gas or waste sectors
- Knowledge in regulatory and market-based policy instruments design and implementation
- Familiarity with environmental, societal, and governance (ESG) metrics and product differentiation)
- Experience with fundraising and philanthropic organizations
- Experience managing internal and external teams, paired with the ability to navigate complex partnerships with differing priorities
- Interest and knowledge in emerging trends in and across technology related to emissions management
The position will remain remote through the COVID-19 pandemic. Once the COVID-19 situation improves, it is preferred that this role will be based out of one of our offices in either Boulder, Colorado or New York City. This will be discussed further throughout the interview process.
The starting salary range for this position is $145,500 - $157,000. This is dependent upon experience that will be discussed and vetted through the interview process. This position also includes an additional 20% bonus target!
