Position Summary 

Rocky Mountain Institute is seeking a senior, experienced Program Marketing Manager to develop and lead the marketing and communications strategy for RMI’s Buildings Program. The Buildings Program seeks to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from U.S. residential and commercial buildings by 2050, driving impact through a range of tactical client engagements, thought leadership, and demonstration projects focused on maximizing the adoption of efficiency and renewable energy technologies. The program’s work will increasingly expand across geographies to have international focus and reach. A successful hire for this position will have a background in buildings, real estate development, advanced building construction techniques, and/or energy-efficiency. The Program Marketing Manager will leverage sectoral knowledge and experience to develop, execute, monitor, and evaluate ongoing strategic marketing and communications campaigns to inform and influence key stakeholders and decision makers. 

 This marketing and communications professional will be an integral part of RMI’s Buildings Program, coordinating across multiple RMI programs and partnering with RMI’s broader Marketing & Communications (M&C) team. This position reports to the program Managing Director. Preferred working locations for this hire are Boulder, CO; Basalt, CO; or Oakland, CA.   


Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead communications strategy for the Buildings Program, a 20+ person program consisting of four key initiatives: Pathways to Zero, Portfolio Energy Optimization, REALIZE, and Residential Energy+ 
  • Develop, coordinate, and deliver ongoing, multi-year marketing and communications campaigns for (1) the larger buildings program and (2) each of the four program initiatives, to build momentum and drive large scale change, leveraging diverse channels including earned media, social/ digital, events, direct communications, and RMI- and partner-owned assets 
  • Research and craft market positioning, competitive differentiation strategies, and audience-specific messages 
  • Develop stakeholder mapping, SWOT analysis, and market penetration strategies to inform and drive promotional efforts and products based on market needs 
  • Identify, establish, and manage relationships with key market influencers and partners 
  • Maintain regular direct outreach to individuals and networks of stakeholders to ‘sell’ our work; regularly creating strategic campaigns and briefings to industry leaders 
  • Keep abreast of global trends in the buildings industry to inform and recalibrate strategic campaign efforts, both in the US and in select global markets 
  • Develop and report against metrics of success 
  • Develop substantive understanding of the technical content for owned impact areas 
  • Train and support RMI’s technical experts and direct into conversations (media, social, other) that are shaping target audience sentiment  
  • Leverage news making moments, milestones, and outcomes to drive awareness and interest in the Buildings Program with target audiences, influencers, and donors 
  • Collaborate with and leverage in-house communications capabilities (i.e., editorial, design, web, traditional and social media) and 3rd-party agencies 
  • Coordinate integrated communications across RMI’s various programs and with external partners 
  • Ensure RMI’s Development team has robust fundraising materials to support the program 
  • Steward program brands in markets  
  • Build, own, and manage annual budget 
  • Other responsibilities as assigned 


Minimum Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience in marketing or communications disciplines within real estate development, advanced building construction, utilities, building standards, and/or energy-efficiency sectors 
  • Proven career and successful track record of strategic marketing campaigns within the buildings sector 
  • Deep and recent personal networks of key stakeholders and leaders within the industry 

Additional Qualifications:

  • A strong team player with excellent interpersonal collaborative skills with staff and counterparts at all organizational levels and with external partners 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills 
  • Excellent initiative and follow-through and project management skills 
  • Proficient at tailoring communication to different audiences (e.g., in-depth for industry audiences; simplified for lay audiences) and across varied mediums/ platforms 
  • Flexible and comfortable working in an iterative manner in a fluid environment 
  • Meticulous attention to detail 
  • Creative thinker 
  • Passion for RMI’s mission  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree
