Program Overview

The Carbon-free Cities and States practice is a growing area in support of state and local action on climate and clean energy. RMI follows a think, do, scale approach to state and local engagements, focusing on designing and supporting activities that can be replicated in many locations. 

Position Overview: 

The analytics manager will lead a small team focused on U.S. state-level greenhouse gas reduction pathways. They will drive the investigation of what is needed to move states toward net zero emissions, using both sophisticated and back-of-the-envelope approaches. While highly technical, their work will include creating easy-to-understand outputs to share and inspire action across the United States.  

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Map greenhouse gas reduction pathways for the United States and for a subset of states, including economy-wide pathways and sector-by-sector pathways for electricity, transportation, buildings, and industry 
  • Estimate the impact of proposed policies and efforts on state-level greenhouse gas emissions to identify highest impact strategies 
  • Create an easy-to-understand dashboard interface that summarizes, for each state and sector, current and business as usual projected emissions, the necessary emissions trajectory to net zero, and the potential impact of policies on moving current emissions toward the necessary emissions trajectory 
  • In collaboration with other RMI experts, create policy options by sector that will accelerate GHG reductions and help reduce the gap between the projected trajectory and necessary trajectory 
  • Lead and work actively with a small, matrixed team of analysts housed across RMI programs including Electricity and Building Electrification 

Key skills include:  

  • Ability to design, build, and maintain complex models (e.g., Excel, MatLab, R) 
  • Understanding of greenhouse gas data, reporting approaches, etc. 
  • Familiarity with deep decarbonization literature 
  • Creative problem-solving approaches to drive project insight 
  • High quality data sourcing and management that allow us to shed new light on problems and solutions 
  • Ability to provide independent, core research on projects 
  • Ability to determine how project results will be measured and held accountable, rigorously challenging and QC-ing findings from RMI teams and partners 
  • Strong writing skills  
  • Strong relationship management with project partners and stakeholders 
  • Ability to shape project strategies from inception to conclusion, with senior guidance, including: determine change models, research methods, timelines, resource plans, communications plans, and stakeholder engagement 
  • Coaching and motivating project team members and resolving any issues throughout project life cycle, including writing project-level reviews for junior staff 


 Minimum Qualifications  

  • Five plus years of experience as a multidisciplinary team manager  
  • Ability to design, build, and maintain complex models (e.g., Excel, MatLab).
  • Deep experience in greenhouse gas reduction pathways 
  • Experience managing external stakeholder relationships  
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications  

  • A graduate degree or equivalent experience in an applicable field such as economics, engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, energy), environmental management, sustainability, or business (finance, international) 
  • Deep expertise in U.S. energy systems, climate, buildings, transportation, and/or electricity industry  
  • Experience working in or with state or city leadership or corporate sustainability leadership
