The Role

Associate or Senior Associate – Electricity Program

Overview

RMI is seeking candidates for Associates and Senior Associates (RMI’s entry and mid-level research and collaboration positions) in our Electricity Program. Associates and Senior Associates are creative problem solvers who use their quantitative, technical and analytical abilities to conduct compelling analyses around vital energy issues. They collaborate with team members to craft visionary yet practical solutions for our research questions and for our clients.

We look for aptitude at solving challenging problems, thinking in numbers, and working in groups. We expect self-motivation, curiosity, creativity, the ability to drive oneself and others toward meaningful results, and a passion for making the world better. RMI Associates are an independent contributor and work closely with colleagues on projects under the direction of more senior staff. Associates have begun to develop expertise in the content area of their program within RMI, and can provide support internal to RMI on that topic.

The key job responsibilities of an Associate primarily include:

  • Provide core research on projects.
  • Locate and manage high quality data that allow us to shed new light on problems and solutions.
  • Create creative problem solving approaches to drive project insight.
  • Develop hypotheses to guide work and propose new ways to analyze problems.
  • Synthesize recommendations into clear and compelling presentations and written reports.
  • Present quantitative information in a clear, visual format.
  • Engage with external experts via phone interviews, conferences, and on occasion responding to outreach requests.

The key responsibilities of a Senior Associate include all of the above, as well as:

  • Design and create approaches and quantitative models to effectively address key questions and challenges posed by our research goals and clients.
  • Structure and guide the work of more junior team members.
  • Engage with external experts and stakeholders through conference presentations, topical expertise for media requests, outreach to RMI donors, and direct collaboration on RMI research.

Successful candidates would support RMI’s Electricity Program. The Electricity Program accelerates the deployment of clean energy solutions in the United States electricity sector to ensure a transition to a distributed energy future. We work with utilities and state regulators to overhaul business models and evolve utilities into “utilities of the future,” with businesses to develop and share solutions for integrating distributed energy resources into the grid, and with influential early adopters who are willing to experiment with and ultimately implement transformative solutions.

Examples of specific skills and experience sought for candidates in support of the Electricity Program include:

  • A tolerance for adversity and uncertainty.
  • Analytical capabilities¬—including quantitative skills—in relation to electricity systems, utility economics, and/or electricity regulation.
  • Experience with or strong knowledge of the US electricity system, including topics ranging from industry regulation, utility business models, distributed energy resource adoption and renewable energy integration.
  • Aptitude for facilitating multi-stakeholder meetings through creative and collaborative engagement.

Qualifications

You may be qualified for this position if you have the following*:

Educational:

  • A graduate degree or equivalent experience in an applicable field such as engineering (mechanical, electrical, civil, energy), business (marketing, finance, international), computer science, mathematics, architecture, physical and social sciences.
  • 2-4 years of cumulative work experience and excellent work references.

Technical:

  • Ability to design, build, and maintain complex models (e.g., Excel, MatLab).
  • Understanding of basic financial analysis and metrics (e.g., NPV, cash flows).

General:

  • Prior experience in consulting, project management, or other related fields preferred. Comparable experience working at a utility or relevant government agency is also desirable.
  • Ability to stick with a problem until a solution is found, but knowledge of when to ask for help.
  • Ability to be self-motivated and work independently.
  • Ability to listen actively, be diplomatic, and share knowledge and information well.
  • Ability to communicate your ideas clearly.
  • Willingness to plunge into unfamiliar disciplines.
  • Willingness to take risks by exploring and testing new ideas.
  • A passion for making the world better

* Our staff is comprised of a wide skill set and we welcome a diverse range of education and experience. In addition, RMI ensures thoughtful review of each candidate to determine the appropriate position level for all individuals and this will be communicated prior to the interview process.
